Primates Of Uganda And Rwanda   Polar Bears Of The Canadian Arctic

In June 2006, we traveled to Uganda and Rwanda to film mountain gorillas and other primates. Gorillas are the largest and most powerful of the apes. Adult males reach an average height of 5-6 feet and weigh from 300 – 500 lbs. Females are smaller, but both are tremendously powerful. There are only 720 mountain gorillas in the world, divided among Rwanda, Uganda and Congo. We also filmed chimpanzees, baboons and several monkey species, including the rare golden monkey.  Much smaller than the gorilla, mature chimp males weigh in at 90 to 120 pounds, with females just slightly lighter. Arctic seas are freezing later and thawing earlier. In fact, Hudson Bay ice has been receding at a rate of 9% per decade since 1978 and scientists suspect global warming. Polar bears spend the summer months fasting as they wait for sea ice to form. The loss of their crucial feeding period is taking a measurable toll on the health of the Hudson Bay polar bears. Scientists have found that, since the mid-1980s, body mass has dropped about 15 percent. Our visit to the Canadian Arctic was a very special trip, allowing us to capture wonderful footage of these majestic predators as they interacted with us and with their environment.   Or enjoy a slide show.
